Mrs. Megan Short Fannon is a higher education instructor, mass communication and integrated marketing communications professional, leader, mentor, devoted community supporter and blogger. Currently in the role as a Lecturer in Public Relations and Mass Communication at East Tennessee State University, she is goal-oriented and student-focused. Fannon plans to one day earn a doctorate degree and title of "professor."
Fannon holds a Master of Science in Integrated Marketing Communications from West Virginia University and is putting to use her knowledge in this field both in the classroom and in the community. From writing and design to survey of promotion and strategic communication campaign production/management, this instructor empowers students with the critical thinking, practical skills, and creative tools needed for the ever-changing landscape of communication.
Outside the academic setting, she assists nonprofit organizations in developing PR campaigns and designing both traditional and digital tactics. Furthermore, Fannon supports the ETSU Department of Communication by defining brand identity and building brand awareness. She promotes its programs of study, researchers, students, and its successes to the campus community and beyond. In this role, she strategically plans and implements messages delivered via social media and traditional media to meet department objectives. Her most notable accomplishment is launching the department's Magazine which is produced annually in conjunction with a student assistant. To further add to the student experience, Fannon publishes student stories in the Department of Communication provide story content.
This dedicated professional also serves the campus by providing consultation services. Of most notable is the ETSU Student Government Association.
In an attempt to provide students with real-world applications and support local nonprofits and campus organizations, Fannon has established partnerships for tactic and campaign creation by students in the classroom setting. Partners include: the Town of Erwin, Habitat for Humanity, Pie Wars, Carter County Tennessee Tourism, the Tri-Cities Affiliate of Susan G. Komen, the Tri-Cities Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, the ETSU Roan Scholars Leadership Program, the Bristol Ballet, and the Southern Appalachian Greenways Alliance.
The most rewarding experience of her career thus far has been co-leading a study-abroad course in Dubai, UAE. Fannon, alongside a seasoned PR professor, taught the major's capstone course, Advertising Practices, in one of the most advanced countries in the world. Focusing on social media, nine students developed a PR campaign for a living/retail space, Astro Complex, in Saudi Arabia. Astro Complex is a subsidy of The Space Investment Company headquartered in Dubai, UAE. The campaign, Be The Star, met the company's goal of creating awareness among elite potential investors and was well-received by the client.
In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Fannon is adviser to the University's Public Relations Student Society of America chapter.
More recently, Fannon advised an honors level student in her research examining newspaper and social media portrayal of President Obama in association with the killing of Osama Bin Laden during the 2012 presidential campaign.
This young leader has been recognized for her knowledge and talents by her undergraduate alma mater, The University of Virginia's College at Wise, where she instructed part-time and continues to guest lecture.
Fannon has also been an adjunct instructor at The University of Virginia's College at Wise and Northeast State Community College.
She is excited for tomorrow's advances and stays up-to-date on market trends, innovations, and processes.
